Police re-arrest village chief at Cross River court

A team of police detectives from zone six command has whisked away the Village Head of Ehom Central in Biase local government area of Cross River State, Chief Onda I. Onda.

Chief Onda was whisked away shortly after stepping out of magistrate court room in Biase local government area.

Lamenting the action of the police, the counsel for the suspect, Barrister E. B. Akinde told DAILY POST that he had never seen that kind of situation.

He said that already the suspect was facing similar matter at a Chief Magistrate Court in Akpet Central, which was still in connection land dispute.

“It is a case of misuse of power against a poor man. The suspect ran to a High Court which granted him an order yet the Police refused to obey the order.

“The order was issued on August 31st 2017 on suit no HC/286/2017 which shall last up to Friday 29/9/2017”, he said.

The High Court Order had restrained the police from arresting, harassing or intimidating the suspect.
The counsel said that the incident occurred today (Wednesday) at the Biase Magistrate Court, where the Chief appeared for a matter.

“Based on the complicity of the cases and the attitude of Police, Chief Onda secured an order from the High Court restraining the Assistant Inspector General of Police Zone six, Supol Ayo (O/C Legal) zone six and Insp. Mike Bassey (IPO) zone six from harassing, arresting or continuing to arrest or detain him or his workers on any matter connected with the land of Ndeonoh which is part of Ndealichi,”‎ he said.

At the time of filling this report, Onda was still with the police and efforts to speak with him failed.
